The envelope was red...
The envelope was red and smelled like roses. Dane was suspicious about it the moment he retrieved it from his box. He worked in an all male school. Who was playing a trick on him, he wondered? His students and peers knew he was not the prankster kind of guy. It wasn't that he didn't have a sense of humor, he actually thought that he was a great prankster, but two years ago he was requested by the school board not to play any tricks on anyone. Truthfully it was less of a request and more of a condition to keep his job. He found the whole incident to be a tad overblown, but in the interest of avoiding more legal fees and risking his career and reputation, he resisted his urges. It didn't seem fair though that tricks could be played on him...how would he retaliate? He tapped the envelope against his palm thinking of what could be inside. His students were already shuffling into the classroom and he'd have to wait until after the bell to open it. It was driving him nuts!
Finally, 43 minutes later the last boy exited and Professor Dane (as his pupils called him), locked his classroom door and sat at his desk. He was careful opening it, not wanting to rip the paper. The strong scent of the cheap perfume assaulted his senses and he crinkled his nose as the flap opened up. Carefully he pulled out the card inside. He was annoyed by the little metallic hearts that dropped out onto his pants leg. He opened the cream card and leaned back in his chair to read. A slow smile spread across his face and he reread it, more slowly the second time. Huh, he thought, it wasn't a prank after all.
